The Music Literacy Program (MLP) is designed to be a suggested curriculum of independent music study.  This noncompetitive program consists of ten progressive levels.  The curriculum is coupled with an annual evaluation sponsored by WSMTA local associations.  The MLP provides valuable feedback for teachers, students and parents through a written evaluation and individual scores in each area.

Payment Process: The registration fee is $15 total per student: $3.50 to be paid to WSMTA while registering students online; and $11.50 per student paid by check to LWMTA. Write one check made out to LWMTA that includes all student fees for the $11.50 portion, and mail to Mary Kaye Owen, 11445 SE 185th Pl, Renton, WA  98055.  Mary Kaye is happy to answer questions via e-mail (mary.k.owen@att.net), text (206-719-8277), or in-person at chapter meetings.

The written test (Levels 1-10) is estimated to take students 20-30 minutes to complete. The rhythm test, as well as listening and technique components (all Levels 1-10) will also be offered. No additional fee will be charged to participate. On the registration sheet, select one or more of these test options for each student registering.   For more information about the content of each test area, view the comprehensive curriculum guide at https://y3e3n2z4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/MLP _handbook.pdf

This year the listening, rhythm, and technique portions will be by appointment (students will be scheduled for 1 hour drop-in time blocks), with written theory remaining drop-in.  More information, as needed, will be announced before the registration period (April 2025).  For a complete testing guide, visit: https://wsmta.org/programs-for-students/musicianship-examinations/
